A Amsterdam en 1943, Hanneke est réceptionniste dans un magasin de pompes funèbres. Pour faire vivre sa famille privée d’emploi par la guerre, elle fait du marché noir avec ses clients, sans en informer ses parents, à partir des cartes de rationnement que son employeur trouve sur les morts. Très ingénieuse, rien ne lui résiste. Elle découvre toujours ce dont ont envie ses clients, jusqu’aux demandes les plus incongrues. De sa plume concise, l’auteur guide le lecteur avec pudeur dans une Amsterdam occupée, où les jeunes qui choisissent de s’engager dans la clandestinité mûrissent prématurément. Ce livre, aussi émouvant que prenant, tient le lecteur en haleine jusqu’aux dernières pages. Il nous rappelle que nos actes, aussi minimes soient-ils, peuvent influencer l’avenir. Avec Une fille au manteau bleu, Monica Hesse signe un premier roman très réussi, une histoire profondément humaine sur l’amitié et la solidarité durant l’occupation, sans pathos ni excès.
